FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I get a Mental Health Care Plan and Rebates?
Your GP can provide you with a Medicare Mental Health Care Plan after assessing your mental health needs. This plan helps reduce the cost of certain psychological therapies, covering up to 10 sessions annually.
As of July 1, 2025, the Medicare rebate for a 50-minute session with a clinical psychologist is $145.25.
This rebate requires a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from a General Practitioner (GP) or other eligible medical practitioner such as a Psychiatrist.
The total fee for the session will be higher, and the rebate only covers a portion of the cost.
Please note that this rebate is only available for Individual Therapy sessions under the plan. You will receive this rebate after attending each of your 10 subsidized sessions per calendar year.
Steps for getting MHCP/MHTP and Rebate:
- Get a Mental Health Treatment Plan: You must first see a GP to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
- Receive a referral: The GP will refer you to a clinical psychologist.
- Use the referral: The psychologist must have the referral before your first session to be able to claim the rebate.
- Claim the rebate: Medicare will rebate $145.25 per session with a clinical psychologist, leaving you to pay the remaining fee to the psychologist.
- Maximum sessions: You are eligible for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year, though your doctor will refer you for a maximum of 6 at a time. You can ask your GP for a review after the 6th session, if you need more sessions.

Can I get a rebate from my Private Health Insurance?
If you hold private health insurance, you may be eligible to claim rebates for psychological services. Please contact your specific health fund directly to confirm your level of cover and eligibility.
Important Note:
Presently, private health insurance cannot be used to cover the gap or claim a rebate for a session for which you are already claiming a Medicare rebate.
What is a Neuropsychological Assessment?
Neuropsychological or cognitive assessments are an opportunity to deep-dive into your thinking skills, abilities, strengths and difficulties.
These assessments use evidence-based, standardised measures to report on a variety of different areas, and compare how your set of skills compare to your other abilities as well as how they might compare to others.
These areas include general intellectual abilities, learning and memory, processing speed, attention and concentration, social skills, sensory preferences and overall executive functioning skills.
Cognitive Assessments can also be used for diagnostic clarification of Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning or Cognitive Disabilities, Academic Difficulties, and more.
All cognitive assessments will require a one-hour intake session to best understand your assessment needs and provide an estimation of the service and costs.
After the intake session and completion of background and preliminary questionnaires, your assessor will help determine the appropriate type of assessment for you to complete in order to answer your query, and any additonal needs such as reports.

How frequently should I attend?
Sessions are typically scheduled fortnightly at the beginning of therapy, however this is collaboratively discussed in your intake or and/or at your first session to suit your needs.
Regular attendance is important to ensure you fully benefit from therapy. Weekly to fortnightly sessions are usually recommended at the beginning of therapy, however this is collaboratively discussed in your intake call or and/or at your first session depending on your needs and reasons for attending.
Whenever possible, the same time will be reserved for you if that is your preference.
Where your preferred/regular time may not be available, we can place you on the cancellation list to offer you this appointment should it become available.
How long are sessions and how many sessions will I need?
Sessions are 50 minutes long.
The number of sessions you require will depend on the issue and goals you are bringing you to therapy.
We usually recommend a minimum of six sessions for you to experience progress, but we’ll be able to provide you a better idea of what to expect following your initial session.
What can I expect in the initial session?
The aim of the initial session is for clients and therapists to get to know each other. My main aim as your therapist in the initial session is to learn more in depth your reasons for attending therapy and what you hope to gain from your therapy. It will also involve getting an understanding of your personal history and current circumstances, as well as any previous therapy experiences you have had, in order to help tailor and develop a clear plan of treatment to you specifically.
What can I expect from therapy?
A safe space to explore, express and process without judgement.
Increased self-understanding, discovering new insights about yourself, the way you relate to others and the world around you.
Increased tools to cope with specific difficulties, and general "life stuff" that can crop up.
Lasting changes to the way you think, feel and act.
A plan to maintain your progress and overcome future setbacks.
Is online therapy as effective as face-to-face therapy?
Yes - Research has shown that therapy delivered online is comparable to in person therapy.
There can be additional benefits to online format, including being able to access specialists outside your geographical location or if accessing therapy in person is not practical to you, as well as saving you time and money on travel to/from appointments, and the ability to access it from the comfort and safety of your own home, office or even a (parked!) car – anywhere private and safe for you.
If there is a type of limitation based on your treatment plan needs, we will let you know at the time of intake, or as soon as possible when this emerges.
